Chris Gibbons – Journalist & Speaker

Chris edits Acumen, the recently-established magazine of the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) at the University of Pretoria. It’s a 96-page publication about business and strategy that has already gained considerable traction in the market place. As well as the distinguished members of GIBS’ faculty, led by its dean, Professor Nick Binedell, Acumen has featured writers like John Carlin (Invictus), Richard Dowden (Royal African Society), Mzukisi Qobo (Univ. of Pretoria), Victor Dlamini, and Gus Silber. Pulitzer-prize winning photographer Greg Marinovich (The Bang Bang Club) has published two photo essays in the magazine.

With an interest in radio that goes back more than 40 years, Chris also maintains an on-air presence via the Morning Market Report on Radio Algoa FM (weekdays, 07.15).

Previously, he presented The Mid-Day Report for Gauteng’s Talk Radio 702 and 567 Cape Talk in the Western Cape, which received a number of awards:

Dr Mark Bussin – Chairperson, 21st Century Pay Solutions

Mark is the Chairperson of 21st Century Pay Solutions Group, a specialist reward consultancy. He has remuneration experience across all industry sectors and is viewed as a thought leader in the remuneration arena.  He serves on and advises numerous boards and remuneration committee’s and has consulted in many countries.  Mark holds a Doctorate in Commerce and has published or presented over 300 articles and papers and has received awards for his outstanding articles in the field. He has appeared on television and radio, and in the press for expert views on remuneration.  Mark has been guest lecturer at several academic institutions and is a Professor at University of Johannesburg, Professor Extraordinaire at NWU; and supervises Master’s and Doctoral thesis. He is the immediate past president of SARA (South African Reward Association) and is a Global Reward Practitioner. He is a Pilot in his spare time.

 

Patrick Craven – National Spokesperson, COSATU

Patrick Craven, COSATU’s National Spokesperson, has been working for the federation since May 2000, when he was appointed as editor of their magazine, The Shopsteward, and other publications. He was also working closely with the National Spokespersons, in writing press statements and giving interviews to the media. On three occasions, he was acting National Spokesperson, in one case for a whole year.

He was promoted to the post of National Spokesperson in 2006 and has been in overall control of all the federation’s relations with the media - writing and editing statements, arranging and chairing press conferences, doing TV and radio interviews and arranging interviews with the national office bearers, keeping the media informed of COSATU’s activities and policies, ensuring media coverage of major COSATU events.

 

Dennis Dykes – Senior Economist, Nedbank

Dennis is the Nedbank Group's Chief Economist.  He joined the Group in December 1983 and was appointed Chief Economist in May 1994.  He serves on a number of organised business committees.  He is a director of SACCI; the Chairman of Business Unity South Africa’s Standing Committee on Economic Policy and is a business representative on the Nedlac Public Finance and Monetary Policy Chamber.  He is the author of many articles for in-house and external publications. In 2012 Dennis won both the Reuters and the Sake24 Economist of the Year awards.  He was also the winner of the 2003 Reuters award.

His qualifications include an honours degree from Bath University and a master's degree in economics from the London School of Economics.

 
 

Prof. Shirley Zinn – Owner, Shirley Zinn Consulting

Prof Shirley Zinn is the former Human Resources Director of Standard Bank South Africa and Deputy Global Head of Human Resources for the Standard Bank Group and has since registered her own company: Shirley Zinn Consulting which provides consulting and advisory services in HR, Transformation, Leadership and Education.

Prior to this she was the Group Executive HR at Nedbank. Before this, she was the General Manager for Human Resources at the South African Revenue Service (SARS). She is also an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria’s Department of Human Resource Management and is the Past President of the Institute for People Management South Africa.

She started her career as a secondary school teacher of English, and then moved to the University of the Western Cape where she lectured on Teacher Education. After this, she served at Southern Life as Training Manager and then moved to the Department of Public Service and Administration’s: South African Management Development Institute, in Pretoria as Director. She held the position of Executive Employment Equity at Computer Configurations Holdings. Before her appointment at SARS, she filled the role of Regional Human Resources Director for Middle East and Africa for Reckitt Benckiser, a global company listed on the London Stock Exchange.

In addition to serving on the Monash South Africa Board, she is currently a Non-Executive Director on the Boards of AdvTech, Tuesday Consulting, MAC Consulting and the Starfish Greathearts Foundation.

She is a mentor to several women in the financial services industry. She is also a patron to the SAALED (South African Association for Learning and Educational Differences), past Honorary Patron of the Corporate Governance Framework, as well as a patron to the Friends Daycare Centre, for children with disabilities. 

She holds a BA (University of the Western Cape); Higher Diploma in Education (University of the Western Cape); B.Ed Honours (UNISA); M.Ed (University of the Western Cape); Ed.M  (Harvard) and Doctorate in Education (Ed.D) (Harvard).

She was awarded the Top Woman in Business and Government and Top Executive in Corporate South Africa by Topco Media in 2008. She also was recognized by the Black Business Quarterly and received the Award for Top Woman in Business and Government and most Visionary Woman in 2008. She also received an award from the World Human resources Congress in Mumbai in 2007 and 2013 respectively for Excellence in Global HR Leadership. In 2012, she was listed in the Top 30 Wonder Women in South Africa by the Wits Business Journal. She also completed her fifth Two Oceans Half Marathon in March 2013.
